Help Me Help You

RUE Magazine/Palecek

Last week I had the distinct honor of attending a trade event at the gorgeous Palecek showroom inside the Galleria at San Francisco Design Center. RUE Magazine Founder and Editor Crystal Palecek hosted "Secrets to Getting Published" featuring the hip and whip-smart panel of herself, Erin Feher, Editor in Chief of California Home + Design, Olivia Martin, Associate Editor of Dwell, and Chloe Redmond Warner of Redmond Aldrich Design.

One topic addressed was the, ahem, importance (or non-importance depending on your opinion - hush to the naysayers!) of having a publicist or marketing rep. Dear designers, focus on your strengths: creating a beautiful product, or an envy-worthy space. Marketing and PR are a different piece of the all-important business model pie, requiring altogether a different skill-set.

The bottom line? Let us marketeers invest the time and energy it takes to help you achieve the recognition you deserve, and may or may not be trying to garner on your own. Recognition, per se, not what you're after? How about credibility? Getting your spaces and pieces published does exactly that, not to mention it places you on the interior design industry radar. Marketing and PR pros employ the means necessary to getting your projects, products, or submissions published. It is key. Let's talk!

One of my early submissions at K2 Design Communications was to California Homes magazine.
Designer Lori Weitzner's "Newsworthy" wallcovering was exactly that; something worth writing about!
